Revere began his apprenticeship as an engraver at the age of 13. He quickly became a skilled engraver and began producing a variety of works, including bookplates, currency, and portraits. Revere also engraved political cartoons and satires, which often criticized the British government.

In 1775, Revere was commissioned to engrave The Boston Massacre. The engraving was based on a painting by Henry Pelham and depicted the events of March 5, 1770, when British soldiers fired on a crowd of colonists, killing five people. Revere also played a key role in the American Revolution as a messenger and spy.
