Early Life and Rise to Leadership

Sun Chief The Lamar, also known as Morning Star, was born sometime between 1820 and 1830 in the Cheyenne village of Arapahoe Creek. As a young man, he displayed extraordinary courage and leadership skills during raids and buffalo hunts, quickly earning the respect of his people.

In the mid-1850s, The Lamar emerged as a prominent leader within the Cheyenne Nation. He played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1851),which established the boundaries of Cheyenne territory and recognized their right to self-governance.

Resistance to U.S. Expansion

When the U.S. government violated the treaty by sending settlers and soldiers into Cheyenne lands, The Lamar led fierce resistance. In 1864, he participated in the infamous Sand Creek Massacre, where U.S. troops slaughtered hundreds of peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children.
