Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1859. He studied art at the Boston Museum School and the Académie Julian in Paris. In the 1880s, Hassam became a member of the Ten American Painters, a group of Impressionist artists who exhibited together in New York City.

Hassam's early work was influenced by the Impressionists, but he gradually developed his own style. He was particularly interested in capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in his paintings. Hassam's paintings are often characterized by their bright colors and loose brushwork.

Hassam was a prolific artist. He produced over 3,000 paintings, watercolors, and prints during his lifetime. His work is represented in many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Hassam died in East Hampton, New York, in 1935. He is considered one of the most important American Impressionist painters.
