In 1970, I was a young British man fresh out of university with a degree in economics. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I wanted to travel. So when I saw an ad for a job in the British Virgin Islands, I jumped at the chance.

I arrived in the BVI in the summer of 1970, and I was immediately struck by the beauty of the islands. The water was crystal clear, the beaches were white sand, and the people were friendly and welcoming.

I quickly settled into my new life in the BVI. I found a job as an economist with the government, and I made friends with a group of other expats. We spent our weekends exploring the islands, swimming, snorkeling, and sailing.

Life in the BVI was not always easy. The islands were still developing, and there were many challenges. But I always found the people to be resilient and resourceful. And I always found something to laugh about.

In this book, I share some of my most amusing experiences from my time in the BVI. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed living them.

Chapter 1: The Day I Met a Talking Goat

One day, I was walking through the bush when I came across a goat. The goat was standing on its hind legs and talking to itself.

"I'm so hungry," the goat said. "I wish I had something to eat."

I was amazed. I had never heard a goat talk before.

"Can you really talk?" I asked.

"Of course I can talk," the goat said. "I'm a talking goat."

I didn't know what to say. I had never met a talking goat before.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"My name is Billy," the goat said. "What's yours?"

"My name is John," I said.

"Well, it's nice to meet you, John," Billy said. "Would you like to come home with me for dinner?"

I didn't know what to say. I had never been invited to dinner by a talking goat before.

"Sure," I said. "I'd love to."

Billy and I walked back to his house, which was a small shack in the middle of the bush. Billy's wife, Mary, was waiting for us at the door.

"Welcome home, Billy," Mary said. "I'm so glad you're back."

"I'm glad to be back," Billy said. "And I brought a friend for dinner."

"Oh, hello," Mary said. "Welcome to our home."

Mary and I sat down at the table, and Billy went into the kitchen to get the food. A few minutes later, he came back with a plate of fried plantains and a bowl of goat stew.

"Help yourselves," Billy said. "It's not much, but it's all we have."

I took a bite of the fried plantains, and they were delicious. I then took a bite of the goat stew, and it was even better.

"This is delicious," I said. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Billy said. "I'm glad you like it."

We ate our dinner and talked about our lives. I told Billy and Mary about my job and my friends. They told me about their life in the BVI.

After dinner, Billy and I went outside to smoke a cigar. We sat on the porch and looked out at the stars.

"I'm glad I met you, John," Billy said. "You're a good friend."

"I'm glad I met you too, Billy,"
