Released in 1993, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused is a coming-of-age comedy that has become a cult classic. The film follows a group of high school students on the last day of school in 1976. The film is notable for its realistic portrayal of teenage life and its soundtrack, which features classic rock songs from the 1970s.

In this oral history, cast and crew members share their memories of making the film.

Genesis

Richard Linklater: I had been working on a script about a group of high school students in the 1970s for a few years. I was interested in exploring the idea of how teenagers define themselves and their place in the world.

Ethan Hawke: I was in college when I first read the script. I was immediately drawn to the characters and the story. It was a very different kind of coming-of-age movie than anything I had seen before.

Matthew McConaughey: I was working as a model in New York when I auditioned for the film. I had never acted before, but Richard saw something in me and gave me the role of David Wooderson.

Filming

Richard Linklater: We shot the film over the course of six weeks in Austin, Texas. We had a very small budget, and we had to shoot fast. But I think that helped to give the film its energy and authenticity.

Ethan Hawke: The atmosphere on set was very relaxed and collaborative. Richard was very open to our input, and he encouraged us to improvise.

Matthew McConaughey: I remember one day we were shooting a scene in a convenience store. Richard told us to just go in and start talking. We ended up improvising the entire scene, and it turned out to be one of the funniest scenes in the movie.

The Soundtrack

Richard Linklater: The soundtrack for Dazed and Confused is one of the most iconic in film history. It features classic rock songs from the 1970s, including "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and "Tuesday's Gone" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Ethan Hawke: The music in the film is so important. It helps to create the atmosphere and the mood. It's also a great way to introduce the characters.

Matthew McConaughey: I love the soundtrack to this movie. It's a perfect time capsule of the 1970s.

The Legacy

Richard Linklater:Dazed and Confused has become a cult classic. It's a film that resonates with people of all ages, regardless of their generation.

Ethan Hawke: I think the film is so popular because it's so relatable. It's a film about the universal experience of being a teenager.

Matthew McConaughey:Dazed and Confused is a timeless film. It's a film that I think people will be watching and enjoying for years to come.

Dazed and Confused is a classic coming-of-age comedy that has stood the test of time. The film's realistic portrayal of teenage life, its iconic soundtrack, and its memorable characters have made it a beloved film for generations of fans.
