Traditional drama games, such as role-playing and improvisations, can be very effective in the language classroom. However, there are also many other drama games that can be used to teach language, some of which do not require any theater experience.

This article provides a list of 130 drama games for the language classroom that go beyond traditional drama and theater techniques. These games are designed to be fun and engaging for students, and they can be used to teach a variety of language skills.

Listening

  • Simon Says: This classic game can be used to teach listening comprehension and vocabulary. Give students commands in the target language, such as "Simon says touch your head" or "Simon says jump up and down." Students must follow the commands only if you say "Simon says" first.
  • Musical Statues: This game is a fun way to practice listening for specific words or phrases. Play music and have students dance around the room. When you stop the music, students must freeze in place. Say a word or phrase in the target language, and students who do not freeze when they hear that word or phrase are out of the game.
  • Telephone: This game is a great way to practice listening and comprehension skills. Whisper a message to one student, and have them whisper it to the next student, and so on. The last student says the message aloud, and the class compares it to the original message.

Speaking

  • Twenty Questions: This game is a great way to practice asking and answering questions in the target language. One student thinks of a person, place, or thing, and the other students ask yes or no questions to try to guess what it is.
  • Charades: This classic game is a fun way to practice vocabulary and communication skills. One student acts out a word or phrase, and the other students guess what it is.
  • Pictionary: This game is similar to charades, but instead of acting out words or phrases, students draw them. The other students guess what the drawings are.

Reading

  • Reader's Theater: This activity is a great way to practice reading aloud and fluency. Students read a short script together, with each student taking on a different role. The class can then discuss the story and the characters.
  • Storytelling: This activity is a great way to practice storytelling skills and creativity. Students can work in pairs or small groups to create and tell their own stories.
  • Book Talks: This activity is a great way to practice speaking and listening skills. Students choose a book that they have read and give a brief presentation about it to the class.

Writing

  • Drama Journaling: This activity is a great way to practice writing skills and creativity. Students can write about their experiences in the drama classroom, their thoughts and feelings about the plays they are studying, or their own creative stories.
  • Playwriting: This activity is a great way to practice writing skills and creativity. Students can work in pairs or small groups to write their own plays.
  • Poetry: This activity is a great way to practice writing skills and creativity. Students can write poems about their experiences in the drama classroom, their thoughts and feelings about the plays they are studying, or their own creative ideas.

Creativity

  • Improvisation: This activity is a great way to practice creativity and spontaneity. Students are given a scenario and must create a scene on the spot.
  • Role-Playing: This activity is a great way to practice creativity and empathy. Students take on different roles and interact with each other in a variety of situations.
  • Mask Work: This activity is a great way to practice creativity and self-expression. Students wear masks and explore different characters and emotions.

Confidence

  • Performance: This activity is a great way to practice confidence and public speaking skills. Students perform scenes, plays, or other creative works for the class.
  • Presentation: This activity is a great way to practice confidence and public speaking skills. Students give presentations about their work in the drama classroom.
  • Feedback: This activity is a great way
